Nepal has firmly reassured India that its territory will not be used for any activities against neighboring countries. This assurance was given by Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak during a meeting with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday. The meeting, part of Misri’s two-day visit to Nepal, aimed to discuss matters of mutual interest and concerns.
During the meeting, Lekhak emphasized Nepal’s appreciation for India’s support in various sectors, including security, infrastructure, energy, and water resources. He specifically highlighted India’s role in enhancing the capabilities of Nepal’s security forces and contributing to infrastructure development.
Lekhak went on to pledge that Nepal would not tolerate any activities that could be construed as hostile towards neighboring countries. “Nepal’s territory will not be allowed to be used for any activities against its neighbours,” the Home Ministry statement quoted the minister as saying.
The assurance comes amid growing concerns about cross-border crime, including drug smuggling. Lekhak acknowledged the need for increased collaboration between the two countries to combat these threats effectively. He also assured full security to Indians residing in Nepal.
In response, Misri highlighted India’s commitment to supporting Nepal in managing its borders, combating trans-border crimes, and ensuring the safety of citizens in both countries. He emphasized the Indian government’s dedication to bolstering Nepal’s security and immigration administration.
Misri’s visit to Nepal marks the first by an Indian foreign secretary since the formation of the new government led by Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli last month. He met with several high-level officials, including his Nepalese counterpart Sewa Lamsal, Deputy Prime Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, and Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba. Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring ways to further enhance cooperation in various sectors.
The visit underscores the importance of the close relationship between Nepal and India. Both nations recognize the need for continued dialogue and collaboration to address shared challenges and ensure regional stability.
