Deepak Raj Joshi, the newly appointed CEO of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), has outlined ambitious plans to boost Nepal’s tourism industry. He has committed to achieving the government’s target of welcoming 1.6 million foreign tourists by the end of the current fiscal year. This goal aligns with the government’s broader vision for tourism as outlined in the national budget.
Joshi, who previously served as CEO in 2019, emphasizes the importance of identifying and promoting Nepal to new international markets. He is dedicated to the successful implementation of the “Visit Decade (2023-2031)” initiative, which aims to solidify Nepal’s position as a top global travel destination. This initiative builds upon his previous term as CEO, which saw tourist arrivals reach around 1.2 million before the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted global travel and tourism.
In his new term, Joshi emphasizes the need for increased research and development in the tourism sector. He recognizes the need to understand market demands and innovate in order to effectively attract visitors. A well-crafted four-year action plan is in place, and Joshi will soon unveil a comprehensive strategy that focuses on international promotion, enhancing tourism infrastructure, and fostering strong public-private partnerships.
One significant challenge Joshi recognizes is the shortage of skilled human resources within the tourism sector. He plans to address this by collaborating with relevant stakeholders to develop a robust talent pool. His appointment as CEO was finalized at the 379th meeting of the Board’s Executive Committee on September 5.
Joshi brings extensive experience in tourism development. He has served as the Destination Committee Chair for the Pacific Asia Travel Association and General Director at the Confederation of Nepalese Industries. He is also the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the “Tourism Hero” and “PATA Personality of the Year.” His experience and commitment to the sector have positioned him well to lead the NTB in achieving its ambitious goals.
In the coming years, Joshi aims to not only meet the government’s tourist target but also to elevate Nepal’s profile as a premier travel destination globally. His dedication to research, strategic planning, and collaborative efforts promises to contribute significantly to the growth and success of Nepal’s tourism industry.
