Nepal’s Triumphant Ascent Marks the Start of Everest’s Spring Climbing Season

Nepal’s successful ascent of Mount Everest marks the beginning of the spring climbing season, which spans from April to early June. Nepal has granted climbing permits to 414 mountaineers, each typically accompanied by a Nepali guide, meaning that over 800 individuals will attempt to reach the summit in the coming weeks. This season is particularly significant as China has reopened the Tibetan approach to Everest, providing climbers with an additional route to the peak.

With its eight of the world’s ten tallest mountains, Nepal attracts hundreds of climbers each spring, lured by the warmer temperatures and generally calmer winds. Last year, over 600 climbers reached Everest’s peak, making it one of the busiest seasons on record. However, the season was also marked by tragedy, with 18 climbers losing their lives. The influx of climbers over the years has transformed mountaineering into a significant economic activity in the region, a legacy that began with Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay’s historic ascent in 1953.
