Netflix has confirmed that the upcoming spin-off series ‘The Rats’ will no longer move forward as part of its latest round of programming cuts. The decision comes after the streaming giant announced that the main series, ‘The Witcher,’ would conclude with its fourth season.
‘The Witcher,’ which premiered in December 2019, is based on the popular book series of the same name by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The show follows the adventures of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a monster hunter for hire. The ensemble cast also includes Anya Chalotra, Eamon Farren, Joey Batey, and Anna Shaffer.
Despite the success of ‘The Witcher,’ Netflix has decided to shelve plans for the spin-off, which would have focused on the group of renegades Ciri (Freya Allan) joined at the end of season three. The spin-off was intended to be a prequel series with six to eight episodes.
The cancellation of ‘The Rats’ is the latest in a series of programming cuts by Netflix. The streaming giant has been facing increased competition from other streaming services and has been looking to reduce costs. In recent months, Netflix has canceled a number of shows, including ‘The Society,’ ‘I Am Not Okay with This,’ and ‘GLOW.’
