Netflix Drops Dev Patel’s ‘Monkey Man’ Over Hindu Nationalism Concerns

Netflix initially produced Dev Patel’s ‘Monkey Man’ but later backed out due to concerns about a character representing right-wing Hindu nationalism, potentially affecting its business in India. Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Universal Pictures took over production, suggesting edits and postponing the release. The film’s portrayal of a political party led to allegations that its color was changed from saffron, associated with Hinduism, to red. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India reportedly delayed the film’s release due to content concerns, including violence, sexual scenes, and references to Hindu religion and mythology. ‘Monkey Man’ depicts Kid, a young fighter driven by past trauma and anger to infiltrate a powerful and corrupt group and seek vengeance for his mother’s death. The film has earned $28 million worldwide but faces uncertainty regarding its release in India. It remains unclear when ‘Monkey Man’ will be available in theaters or on OTT platforms in India.
