## Atlas: A Netflix Sci-Fi Movie That’s Absurdly Entertaining
Atlas, the latest sci-fi offering from Netflix, is a bizarre amalgamation of unoriginality and absurdity. While its plot is blatantly derivative of several classic sci-fi films, the movie manages to be surprisingly entertaining, primarily due to Jennifer Lopez’s captivating performance.
Lopez stars as Atlas Shepherd, a data analyst who secretly possesses formidable combat skills. She is recruited to join a team of Marines on a mission to confront Harlan, a rogue AI who threatens to destroy humanity. Along the way, Atlas must rely on an AI-powered suit of armor named Smith to combat Harlan’s forces.
The plot of Atlas is a patchwork of familiar sci-fi tropes, lacking a truly distinctive identity. However, there are occasional moments of philosophical exploration, particularly in Atlas’ discussions with Smith about the nature of souls. These introspective moments are unfortunately often sidelined by generic action sequences, which are nonetheless executed with some skill and coherence.
The visual effects in Atlas range from impressive to lackluster. The depiction of a futuristic Los Angeles is visually appealing, but the scenes featuring Lopez piloting Smith are less convincing. The overall aesthetic is characterized by an abundance of burnt-orange hues and reflective surfaces, which can become visually overwhelming at times.
The acting in Atlas is generally solid, albeit uneven. Mark Strong and Sterling K. Brown deliver detached yet professional performances, while Simu Liu’s portrayal of Harlan is intentionally over-the-top. However, it is Lopez who truly elevates the film.
