Neuralink Expands Clinical Trials for Brain Implants

Neuralink, the neurotechnology company founded by Elon Musk, is inviting applications for their second human clinical trial of its brain-computer interface (BCI) implant. The PRIME Study aims to assess the safety and functionality of the N1 implant and R1 surgical robot in individuals with quadriplegia or other severe physical disabilities.

Eligibility and Application Process

Individuals within the United States or Canada, aged 18 or older, with quadriplegia, paraplegia, vision loss, hearing loss, the inability to speak, and/or major limb amputation are eligible to participate in the Patient Registry. Prospective participants can register online and will be asked to provide medical information, demographics, and details about their current assistive technologies.

First Clinical Trial Progress

In January 2023, Neuralink implanted its BCI device in the brain of Noland Arbaugh, its first patient. Arbaugh, who has been paralyzed from the shoulders down since a diving accident in 2016, has made significant progress with the device, according to Neuralink. He can now play video games, browse the internet, and control a computer cursor on his laptop using only his thoughts.

Implant Wire Issue and Resolution

Last week, Neuralink disclosed that during the first human trial, some of the implant’s tiny wires moved out of position in Arbaugh’s brain. This issue was previously known to the company from animal testing, but Neuralink proceeded with the US approval process last year, believing the risk of wire retraction was low. Nevertheless, the company was able to restore the implant’s function by making adjustments, including refining its algorithm to enhance sensitivity.

Neuralink aims to use its BCI technology to help paralyzed patients regain control over their digital devices and improve their quality of life. The PRIME Study is a crucial step in advancing the development and testing of this groundbreaking technology.
