Republican Nevada Senate candidate Sam Brown is facing accusations of a “grift” from his Democratic opponent’s campaign and the Nevada Democratic Party. The accusations stem from Brown’s promotion of his new book, which details his journey to recovery from severe injuries he sustained during a 2008 deployment in Afghanistan. Brown, a retired Army captain and Purple Heart recipient, says the book shares “how I took some of the toughest circumstances in my life, found a mission, & found hope for myself in others” and about his “mission to give hope and change the world.”
However, Johanna Warshaw, communications director for Jacky Rosen, Brown’s Democratic opponent, dismissed the book as a “grift” in a post on X. “Don’t worry Sam, have a feeling there will be plenty of time for you to promote your latest grift after November 5th,” Warshaw wrote. The Nevada Democratic Party echoed these sentiments, also labeling the book a “grift” and criticizing Brown for using his Senate run to “line his own pockets.”
Brown’s campaign has fiercely defended the book, calling the accusations disrespectful to veterans. Kristy Wilkinson, Brown’s campaign communications director, stated, “The contempt this statement has for US Military Veterans and Wounded Warriors is very revealing. It’s not just an insult to the Browns, it’s an insult to all NV veterans for their sacrifice and service to the country.” Wilkinson further asserted that Brown would “never stoop so low, never insult our veterans, and never let partisan politics influence how he treats other people.”
The Nevada Democratic Party, in a statement to Fox News Digital, maintained its stance, arguing that Brown has a history of “shady” financial practices. The party pointed to Brown’s use of a political action committee (PAC) during a previous election cycle, claiming it was utilized as a “slush fund” to cover campaign debts. The party added, “Instead of talking to Nevada voters about the issues they care about in a state he just moved to a few years ago, Sam Brown seems more focused on a self-promotional book pre-sale in the final months before the election.”
The Nevada Senate race is being closely watched as experts believe it represents a significant opportunity for Republicans to gain control of the Senate. The Cook Political Report classifies the race as a “toss up,” alongside Senate races in Michigan, Montana, and Ohio. The ongoing controversy surrounding Brown’s book and his opponent’s accusations is likely to further fuel tensions in this already highly contested race.
