New 97-Metre Submarine Unleashed into Royal Navy Fleet, Named Agamemnon

Joining the Royal Navy’s fleet, the colossal Agamemnon, an Astute-Class nuclear-powered submarine, has been unveiled in Cumbria. Weighing in at 7,400 tonnes, the 97-meter vessel possesses advanced features like oxygen and freshwater generation from seawater, enabling global travel without surfacing.

Armed with state-of-the-art sensors, Tomahawk Land Attack Missile systems, and Spearfish torpedoes, the Agamemnon embodies cutting-edge naval power. Amidst the fanfare, the naming ceremony included a blessing and the traditional christening with beer.

Steve Timms, managing director of BAE Systems’ submarines division, hailed the Agamemnon as a significant milestone in the UK’s nuclear submarine program. The Astute Class serves as a cornerstone of the nation’s defenses, and the government’s commitment to investing in British sovereign capabilities is evident in the completion of the Agamemnon and the progress on the seventh and final vessel.

In a testament to the submarine’s namesake, the ancient Greek king known for his leadership, the Agamemnon will undoubtedly live up to its legendary status. Defense Procurement Minister James Cartlidge underscored its strategic significance, highlighting its role in defending the nation and providing a competitive edge. The Astute Class program has also been instrumental in supporting thousands of jobs and showcasing Britain’s commitment to investing in its own defense capabilities.

The Barrow shipyard, the birthplace of the UK’s submarine prowess, is expanding to accommodate the construction of the Dreadnought Class submarines, the next generation of nuclear deterrence. BAE Systems’ submarine division, employing over 13,500 skilled individuals, is expected to increase its workforce to 17,000 in the coming years.

The arrival of the Agamemnon into the Royal Navy fleet symbolizes the nation’s unwavering commitment to maintaining a formidable submarine force, safeguarding its interests in the ever-evolving global security landscape.
