The tourism industry is undergoing a significant shift towards sustainability, and a new Bachelor of Science in International Sustainable Tourism is poised to lead the way. This innovative three-year program, developed in partnership with the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), aims to empower future leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to create a more responsible and sustainable travel experience.
The program, which launched in Madrid this academic year, has already attracted 30 students from six countries, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Georgia, and Switzerland. These students are eager to learn about the critical role they can play in shaping the future of travel. They will gain expertise in a wide range of areas, including environmental responsibility, economic development, and responsible tourism practices.
The UN Tourism Executive Director, Natalia Bayona, emphasizes the crucial role of skilled professionals in the tourism sector’s evolution: “The tourism sector needs skilled people with diverse knowledge and innovative vision, and the Bachelor in International Sustainable Tourism was created to accompany tourism leaders on their journey into the future.” With the tourism sector expected to require approximately 880,000 jobs annually by 2030, this program is not just an educational initiative but a transformative force.
UN Tourism recognizes the pivotal role of higher education in building a sustainable tourism industry. The organization’s educational roadmap prioritizes this goal, acknowledging tourism’s rapid growth and its position as the largest employer of young people worldwide. However, the sector also faces challenges, including a shortage of skilled professionals and limited access to education for young people in some regions.
The new undergraduate degree program represents a significant step towards bridging this gap. By attracting students from diverse backgrounds and offering courses in Madrid, Lucerne, and online, the program promotes international diversity and accessibility. The program’s location in Spain and Switzerland, consistently ranked among the top tourism destinations globally, further enhances its appeal and provides a rich learning environment.
The shared vision of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) and UN Tourism is to create a universally accessible program that empowers students to lead the sustainable transformation of the tourism sector. This ambitious initiative is a testament to the commitment to fostering responsible tourism practices and ensuring the industry’s continued growth while minimizing its environmental impact.
