Crown prosecutors in New Brunswick have overwhelmingly voted in favor of strike action, with 99 percent of members expressing support. The New Brunswick Crown Prosecutors Association issued a statement today highlighting the dire state of the province’s criminal justice system due to recruitment and retention problems. Association president Shara Munn emphasized that Crown lawyers have been engaged in negotiations with the province for over a year. Despite these efforts, the association lamented the lack of progress and the ongoing shortage of prosecutors, a situation that is putting the justice system at risk. Munn explained that prosecutors are struggling under heavy workloads due to the shortage, which could potentially compromise community public safety. The strike vote involved 100 percent of the province’s Crown prosecutors and family Crown counsel. A conciliation meeting has been scheduled for June 14-15 to address the ongoing crisis. ‘We’re committed to ensuring that New Brunswickers have the justice system they deserve,’ Munn said. ‘But if the government doesn’t cooperate with us to resolve this crisis, more experienced prosecutors will leave, exacerbating the situation and endangering public safety.’
