New California Bill Could Prohibit Third-Party Airport Security Vendors

California Bill Proposes Dedicated Lanes for Third-Party Airport Security Vendors

A California bill known as SB 1372 is seeking to prohibit third-party airport security vendors like Clear Secure from utilizing standard security lanes or TSA PreCheck lanes for their expedited services. Frequent fliers who pay for a Clear membership currently enjoy the privilege of skipping airport security lines. However, the bill would require these vendors to operate separate, dedicated security lanes in California airports starting in 2025.

Senator Newman’s Perspective

Senator Josh Newman, a Democrat representing parts of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties, introduced the bill. He believes that the quality of airport security should not be determined by one’s income or willingness to pay. He argues that non-Clear members are unfairly treated by being forced to wait in longer lines while those who pay for the service get preferential treatment. Newman emphasizes that airport security services are funded by tax dollars, and all travelers should have equal access regardless of their financial status.

Opposition from Airlines

Six major airlines, including Delta, United, and Southwest, have voiced their opposition to the bill, citing potential revenue loss from Clear that could lead to higher airfare prices. In a letter to the Senate Transportation Committee, airline representatives expressed concerns that the bill would hinder airports’ ability to manage security lines effectively and negatively impact the travel experience for customers.

Upcoming Hearing and Path Forward

The bill is scheduled for its first hearing on Wednesday. If it passes the state legislature, it will be sent to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk for approval or veto. The outcome of the bill and its potential impact on airport security and traveler equity remain to be seen.
