The New England Revolution have bolstered their backline with the acquisition of defender Xavier Arreaga from the Seattle Sounders FC. In exchange for the Ecuadorian international, the Revolution have sent a 2025 international roster slot and up to $75,000 in cash to the Sounders.
Arreaga, 29, arrives in New England with a wealth of experience, having played over 100 games in Major League Soccer (MLS). He has also made 20 appearances for the Ecuadorian national team, including nine World Cup qualifying games.
The defender played an integral role in the Sounders’ MLS Cup victory in 2019 and their run to the final in 2021. He also helped the team win the 2022 Concacaf Champions Cup, starting in all eight games en route to the title.
New England Revolution coach Caleb Porter is expecting Arreaga to make an immediate impact on the team’s defense, which has allowed 14 goals in eight games this season.
‘Xavier will bring a calm and composure to our backline with his quality in possession and ability to start our attack,’ Porter said in a press release on Tuesday. ‘Defensively, he is a smart player who reads the game extremely well and will complement our other defenders.’
Arreaga will add leadership and confidence to the Revolution’s locker room, according to Porter.
‘I really like his track record of winning trophies in Ecuador and in MLS,’ Porter added. ‘His international experience will add leadership and confidence to our locker room.’
