The New England Revolution have strengthened their defense by acquiring experienced defender Xavier Arreaga from the Seattle Sounders. In exchange, the Revolution sent a 2025 international roster slot and up to $75,000 in general allocation money to the Sounders.
Arreaga, 29, brings a proven track record of success to New England, having played a key role in the Sounders’ 2019 MLS Cup triumph and their 2022 CONCACAF Champions Cup victory. The Ecuadorian international has amassed over 100 appearances in MLS regular-season matches, including 82 starts, and has played in more than 220 games across all competitions.
Revolution sporting director Curt Onalfo expressed his delight at the acquisition of Arreaga, stating, “We are pleased to welcome Xavier Arreaga to the Revolution to continue his decorated MLS career. Xavier has been a key part of title-winning teams in Seattle, both in our league and at the continental level. His arrival adds important reinforcement to our defensive unit for the rest of this season and beyond.”
Revolution head coach Caleb Porter is hopeful that Arreaga’s arrival will bolster a defense that has conceded 14 goals, placing them in the middle of the pack. The team also has the second worst goal differential in the league, at minus-nine.
Porter praised Arreaga’s composure and defensive acumen, saying, “Xavier will bring a calm and composure to our backline with his quality in possession and ability to start our attack. Defensively, he is a smart player who reads the game extremely well and will complement our other defenders. I really like his track record of winning trophies in Ecuador and in MLS, and his international experience will add leadership and confidence to our locker room.”
Arreaga’s arrival is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the Revolution’s defense as they look to improve their position in the standings and make a push for the MLS Cup playoffs.
