New EU Law Grants Consumers Right to Affordable Repairs Beyond Warranty

Under the new policy, consumers will be able to claim free or reasonably priced repairs even after the warranty expires. The legislation requires manufacturers to make repairs to designated repairable goods out of warranty, either at no cost or for a price that does not discourage repair over disposal. The law includes fridges, vacuum cleaners, televisions, and washing machines sold within the EU. Additionally, consumers gain the right to choose between repair or replacement during the warranty period, with a 12-month extension of the guarantee after repair. After warranty expiration, consumers can still request repairs at a reasonable price that accounts for the cost of spare parts and labor. The EU strives to eliminate software or hardware that hinders repairs, with national governments authorized to impose penalties for non-compliance. This initiative signifies a significant step towards more sustainable consumption practices, aiming to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions associated with disposable consumer goods.
