New Jersey to Experience a Cold Snap After Brief Return to Spring
Forecasters predict a brief return to spring-like conditions in New Jersey this afternoon, with partly sunny skies and temperatures reaching the high 60s. However, a surge of colder air from Canada later Wednesday will bring a sharp drop in temperatures, making it feel more like early March than late April.
Freeze Watch Issued for Northern Counties
Overnight Wednesday into early Thursday, temperatures in northern sections of New Jersey are expected to drop below freezing, posing a threat to sensitive outdoor plants and pipes. The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for five counties: Morris, Sussex, Warren, western Bergen, and western Passaic. Temperatures in these areas could dip down to 30 or 31 degrees.
Cold Temperatures Expected Thursday Morning
Although temperatures will be cold Thursday morning, forecasters say steady winds may prevent air temperatures on the ground from dropping into the 20s, as they did in some areas of the state earlier this week. Cool air is expected to linger throughout the day, keeping temperatures in the 50s despite mostly sunny skies.
Frost or Freezing Conditions Possible Friday Morning
Overnight Thursday into Friday morning, temperatures will likely drop into the low to mid-30s, posing another risk of frost or freezing. With mostly sunny skies Friday afternoon, temperatures should climb into the low 60s.
Warmup Expected Over the Weekend
Similar highs are expected on Saturday, with partly sunny skies. A noticeable warmup is expected on Sunday, with partly sunny skies and highs reaching the mid- to upper-70s. Temperatures could make a run for 80 degrees on Monday, with some areas of New Jersey getting close to 85 degrees, according to the weather service’s long-range forecast.
