More than two decades after Johnny Cash’s passing and 14 years since his last posthumous album, ‘American VI: Ain’t No Grave,’ his son, John Carter Cash, has announced the release of a new album titled ‘Songwriter.’ This album features previously unreleased recordings from 1993, showcasing 11 songs written by Cash throughout his career.
In early 1993, Johnny Cash found himself between contracts and decided to record a collection of songwriting demos at LSI Studios in Nashville. These recordings were intended to help his family financially and to preserve some of his cherished songs. However, after meeting producer Rick Rubin, these recordings were shelved as Cash embarked on a significant musical partnership that would revitalize his career.
Nearly three decades later, John Carter Cash rediscovered these songs and decided to bring them to life. He stripped them down to their bare essentials, featuring only Cash’s powerful vocals and acoustic guitar. Along with co-producer David Fergie Ferguson, they assembled a group of musicians who had played with Johnny, including Marty Stuart and the late Dave Roe, to add new instrumentation to the tracks.
The album’s first single, ‘Well Alright,’ has been released and showcases Cash’s timeless voice and songwriting. The full album, ‘Songwriter,’ will be available on streaming platforms, CD, and vinyl on June 28 and can be pre-ordered now.
For John Carter Cash, working on his father’s music is a deeply personal experience. He sees it as a way to connect with his father’s legacy and share his music with a new generation of listeners. He hopes that this album will spark curiosity and lead people to discover more of Johnny Cash’s vast catalog.
