New Leadership for Indian Sport Climbing: SCFI Appoints President and Vice President

The Sport Climbing Federation of India (SCFI) has ushered in a new era of leadership with the appointment of Rajmohan Pillai as president and Sushil Malik as vice president. The elections, held on Sunday, signal a commitment to fostering a more robust and sustainable climbing ecosystem in India.

During the gathering, General Secretary Col SP Malik highlighted the importance of scientific athlete development, drawing attention to the recent achievements of young Indian climbers. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to athlete development, encompassing nutritional, psychological, and physical aspects, particularly noting the unique challenges posed by high-altitude climbing.

“High performance is crucial for athletes as an athlete’s physiology is most tested when he climbs altitude. It is imperative that we begin to assist more athletes who are testing the limits of today’s climbing challenge with advanced recovery and guidance,” Malik stated in a media release.

Malik, who brings a wealth of international experience and a strong dedication to nurturing young talent, is expected to make significant contributions to the SCFI. His extensive involvement in the boxing circuit, particularly in Haryana, has resulted in the development of numerous successful athletes, and his leadership is poised to have a positive impact on the sport of climbing in India.

Dr. Pillai, the new president, echoed the importance of supporting India’s burgeoning climbing community. “We can see that Indian interest in climbing as a sport is growing today. The ecosystem must be more sustainable, which means we must give our talents more sophisticated support so they can be well-prepared for their mission to thrive,” he said. Pillai’s extensive experience and leadership within the Beta Group make him a valuable asset to the SCFI, bringing valuable insights and strategic direction to the organization.

The new leadership team at the SCFI is committed to cultivating a supportive environment for climbers, focusing on scientific development and providing the resources necessary for athletes to reach their full potential. Their combined experience and dedication are expected to contribute to a thriving and successful future for sport climbing in India.
