New Officer-in-Charge Appointed at Tala Police Station Following Arrest in RG Kar Medical College Rape Case

In the wake of the arrest of Abhijit Mondal, the former Officer-in-Charge (O/C) of Tala Police Station, in connection with the horrific rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College, a new O/C has been appointed. Malay Kumar Dutta, Inspector of Police (I-Cadre), has taken over the position, according to an official order issued by the Kolkata Police Commissioner on Thursday. Dutta was previously serving as the Additional O/C of Shyampukur Police Station and was already overseeing the duties of the O/C at Tala Police Station.

The appointment comes at a crucial juncture, as investigations into the heinous crime continue. Both Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, and the arrested O/C, Abhijit Mondal, were transferred to the Presidency Jail from the Sealdah Court on Wednesday. They were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for their alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the medical college.

Adding to the growing list of developments in this case, the West Bengal Medical Council took the significant step of cancelling Sandip Ghosh’s medical practitioner registration earlier this week. This followed a separate investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. The ED conducted a search operation at Ghosh’s residence in Chinar Park, Kolkata, as part of their investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The CBI’s investigation into the financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was initiated following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, which ordered a probe into allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement at the institution. On September 10, a CBI court remanded Sandip Ghosh and three others to judicial custody in connection with these financial irregularities.

Abhijit Mondal, who was suspended by the Kolkata Police on September 18 following his arrest by the CBI on September 14, was produced before the Sealdah Court on Sunday along with Ghosh. The investigation into the rape and murder case, as well as the financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College, continues. The new appointment of the O/C at Tala Police Station signifies the ongoing efforts to bring justice to the victims and ensure accountability for the alleged crimes.
