The Lok Sabha Secretariat has addressed the issue of a leak in the lobby of the new Parliament building during heavy rains in Delhi on Wednesday, July 31. The secretariat attributed the leak to the displacement of adhesive material used to fix the glass domes over the lobby. A video showcasing a bucket placed to collect water dripping from the ceiling went viral on social media, sparking reactions and criticism from the Opposition regarding the substantial expense involved in the new Parliament building’s construction.
In a statement, the Lok Sabha Secretariat explained the incident, highlighting the architectural concept of the building. They emphasized the use of glass domes in various parts of the structure, including the lobby, to maximize natural light. The secretariat clarified that during the heavy rainfall, the adhesive securing the glass domes over the lobby became slightly displaced, resulting in minor water leakage.
The secretariat further assured the public that the issue was promptly addressed, with corrective measures taken immediately. They stated that no leakage had been observed since then. Similarly, accumulated water opposite the Makar Dwar entrance was also drained quickly.
The incident has sparked criticism from the opposition, with former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav questioning the new Parliament building’s design. In a Hindi post, he compared the old Parliament building favorably, highlighting its sturdiness and accessibility to older MPs. He also questioned the necessity of the new Parliament building, especially while the new structure experiences water leakage despite its significant cost. Akhilesh Yadav further posed a question about whether water dripping from new roofs constructed under the BJP government is part of a deliberate design or a recurring issue.
