New Regulations Mandate Cash Refunds for Delayed or Canceled Flights
Passengers on domestic flights delayed by three hours or more or international flights delayed by six hours or more will now automatically receive a cash refund for the entire flight price, as per new regulations implemented by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Canceled flights also qualify for refunds, eliminating the need for passengers to request or file complaints.
Airlines may offer alternative options such as a new flight or travel credit, but passengers now have the legal right to decline them and opt for a cash refund. This automatic refund process ensures swift compensation for flight disruptions.
In addition to cash refunds, the DOT has issued new guidance on checked baggage. If a bag is not delivered within 12 hours for domestic flights or 30 hours for international flights, airlines must refund the checked-bag fee. Refunds will also be issued for additional amenities, such as Wi-Fi or seat selection, if they are not provided during the flight.
These regulations are part of the administration’s efforts to eliminate surprise fees in air travel. Airlines are now required to clearly disclose all extra fees when displaying fare prices.
The new regulations aim to protect passengers, restore confidence in air travel, and secure passenger trust amidst industry challenges.
