The SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for COVID-19, has a concerning ability to generate variants. Researchers have now developed a new technology called tARC-seq, which offers more precise detection of rare SARS-CoV-2 mutations. Using tARC-seq, they discovered that the virus’s mutation rate is higher than originally estimated and pinpointed mutation hotspots. Notably, they found that the virus exploits template switching and complex mutations to evolve rapidly, producing variants that can adapt and persist in human populations. This technology can aid in monitoring viral evolution and developing effective vaccines.
