UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced the appointment of General Gwyn Jenkins as the UK’s new national security adviser. Jenkins, who has an extensive military background, will succeed Sir Tim Barrow, who is set to become the UK’s next ambassador to the United States.
Sunak praised Jenkins’ qualifications for the role, citing his military experience and previous roles within No. 10 Downing Street, including deputy national security adviser.
Jenkins expressed his honor at the appointment and his commitment to working with colleagues across government to keep the nation safe in challenging times.
The position of national security adviser is one of the government’s most prestigious placements and carries even greater weight in advance of the US presidential election in November, where Donald Trump could win a second term in the White House.
Barrow, the former ambassador to Ukraine, Russia, and the EU, will be sent to the British embassy in Washington at the end of this year. He said he is “deeply honored” by the appointment and looks forward to “working with the US administration and our allies to address the challenges we face together.”
