New York City Tourism + Conventions Honored with President’s “E” Award for Export Service

On May 14th, at the U.S. Department of Commerce Headquarters in Washington, D.C., New York City Tourism + Conventions was bestowed with the President’s “E” Award for Export Service. This accolade recognizes organizations for significantly enhancing U.S. exports, and in the case of New York City Tourism + Conventions, their efforts have been instrumental in boosting international tourism revenue.

The President’s “E” Award is the highest honor a U.S. entity can receive for export service. International tourism plays a pivotal role in the U.S. economy, with annual expenditures reaching $233.5 billion, surpassing that of any other nation. As the primary gateway for international visitors, New York City has made substantial contributions to this revenue stream.

The nomination for New York City Tourism + Conventions highlighted its initiatives in training and certifying destination travel specialists, as well as the effectiveness of its marketing strategies. These endeavors have not only led to notable increases in tourism but have also supported the broader goal of expanding national exports, strengthening the U.S. economy, and creating American jobs.

“It is an honor for New York City Tourism + Conventions to receive the President’s “E” Award,” said Fred Dixon, President and CEO of New York City Tourism + Conventions. “New York City remains the number one port of entry for international travelers, who account for 20% of visitation and 50% of spending across New York City’s $74 billion tourism economy. This award is a testament to the power of travel and the role it can play as an economic driver for communities everywhere.”

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo emphasized the importance of trade in positively impacting the lives of Americans and businesses alike. She expressed pride in recognizing the recipients of the President’s “E” and “E Star” awards for their contributions to increasing economic prosperity across the country.

New York City’s status as the largest U.S. entry point remains unchanged, and it boasts the world’s most active airport system, including LGA, JFK, and EWR. In 2023, tourism in NYC generated an estimated $74 billion in economic impact, with direct spending exceeding $48 billion. The sector supported over 380,000 jobs in leisure and hospitality, accounting for approximately 9% of the city’s workforce. Additionally, it benefited thousands of small and minority-owned businesses across its five boroughs.

In 2023, NYC welcomed 62.2 million visitors, of which 50.6 million were domestic travelers and 11.6 million were international visitors. Visitation is projected to rise to 64.8 million in 2024, reaching 97% of the record levels seen in 2019.
