The viral post circulating on social media stating that “everyone in New York State is getting money in April” is partially true. While not everyone will receive a direct payment, many Empire State residents will benefit from a one-time credit on their future electric bills through the New York State Energy Bill Credit. This credit is part of a $200 million fund allocated by the New York State Public Service Commission and is intended to provide energy bill relief to over 8 million metered electric and gas customers.
According to Governor Kathy Hochul, this one-time credit will help offset energy costs for hardworking families and is part of a broader effort to reduce costs for vulnerable New Yorkers. Over $1.4 billion has been or will be made available to New York consumers to help offset energy costs this year.
The amount of the credit varies depending on the utility provider. Central Hudson customers will receive $14.58 for electric and $19.06 for natural gas, while NYSEG customers will get $9.52 for electric and $15.66 for gas. The credit will be automatically applied to bills within 45 days of utilities receiving state budget funds.
If you are one of the over 8 million New Yorkers who will receive this credit, no action is needed on your part. The credit will appear on your bill as “New York State Energy Bill Credit.”
This Energy Bill Credit is a welcome relief for many New Yorkers facing rising energy costs. It is important to note that not everyone in the state will receive the credit, only those who are customers of large electric and gas utilities.
