The rising cost of electricity is taking a significant toll on New Yorkers, with many households struggling to keep up with their bills. A recent survey of 1,000 Americans revealed that New Yorkers are racking up an average of $766 in credit card debt due to utility expenses. This financial burden is not limited to New York City; households across the state are feeling the pinch.
Texas households may be more likely to experience extreme temperatures, but New Yorkers are equally stressed about their electricity bills. In fact, during the harshest seasons, Texas households are only 21% more likely than New York and California households to feel the heat when it comes to paying electric bills.
Compounding the financial struggles, over one-third of New Yorkers have admitted to slipping up at least once with their electric bill payment in the last year. And the situation is even more dire for some, with 14% having at least one unpaid electric bill hanging over their heads.
The rising electricity costs are not only straining wallets but also putting a strain on households. Over a quarter (26%) of people say that a household member had to take on extra work to make ends meet. And during peak usage months, more than half of New Yorkers wrestle with their electric bills.
The bottom line is that New Yorkers are wrestling with rising electricity costs, leaving their wallets feeling empty. It’s time for those in charge to take charge and find ways to bring relief to New Yorkers, helping them keep the lights on without draining their bank accounts.
