New Zealand’s right-arm pace spearhead, Ben Sears, has been ruled out of the upcoming three-Test series against India due to a nagging knee injury. The news comes as a significant blow for the Kiwis, who were hoping to have Sears’ potent pace in their lineup for the crucial series. The opening Test is scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
Sears’ departure to India was initially delayed after he experienced discomfort in his left knee during New Zealand’s recent tour of Sri Lanka. Subsequent scans revealed a tear to his meniscus, prompting medical consultations in hopes of clearing him for play. However, after careful consideration and following medical advice, the decision was made to rule him out of the series. New Zealand Cricket has stated that a detailed plan for Sears’ treatment and rehabilitation will be announced soon.
In his absence, Jacob Duffy has been called in as his replacement. The uncapped 30-year-old right-arm fast bowler, known for his impressive pace and accuracy, is set to depart for India on Wednesday. Duffy brings a wealth of experience from 102 First-Class outings, where he has claimed a commendable 299 wickets. While he remains uncapped at the Test level, he has represented the Kiwis in six ODIs and 14 T20Is, showcasing his ability to perform at the international stage.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment at Sears’ absence, highlighting his strong start to his Test career and his crucial role as a pace option for the team. “We’re obviously disappointed for Ben who made a strong start to his Test career during the home summer and offers a genuine pace option,” said Stead. “It remains to be seen how long we’ll be without him for, but we’re hopeful his road to a full recovery will be a short one.”
Stead also expressed his confidence in Duffy’s ability to fill the void left by Sears. “It’s an exciting opportunity for Jacob who has been around Test the squad before. With three Tests ahead of us he has every chance of making his Test debut.” Stead emphasized that Duffy’s recent experience in the County Championship would be beneficial for the player. “Jacob’s recent experience playing for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship certainly pushed his place. His performances in white-ball cricket for the Blackcaps have always been impressive and we’re confident he’ll be able to contribute if called upon,” he added.
The upcoming Test series against India is crucial for New Zealand, as they look to secure a coveted victory on Indian soil. With Sears sidelined, the pressure will be on the remaining bowlers to step up and deliver consistent performances. The team will be hoping that Duffy can make a successful transition to the Test format and contribute significantly to the team’s success.
