Newsom Proposes Emergency Legislation for Abortion Access Amid Arizona Ban

California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking action to ensure abortion access for Arizona residents amidst the expected reinstatement of a near-total abortion ban in the state. This emergency legislation, introduced through the California Legislature’s women’s caucus, will allow Arizona abortion providers to quickly obtain licenses to treat their patients in California.

The legislation comes as Arizona faces the imminent implementation of an 1864 law prohibiting abortion, except to save the life of the mother. Previously, Republicans in Arizona passed a ban after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Governor Newsom’s proposal aims to provide an alternative for Arizona residents seeking abortion care by allowing providers to operate in California. This move highlights the ongoing debate over abortion rights and access across the United States.
