With the NFL Draft rapidly approaching, teams are faced with a myriad of decisions as they navigate a particularly intriguing draft class in 2024. While the Chicago Bears are heavily favored to select Caleb Williams with the top overall pick, the uncertainty begins at the number two spot, where the Washington Commanders hold the reins.
Teams such as the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals, who find themselves high in the draft order, have openly expressed their willingness to engage in trades. However, the hefty price tag associated with acquiring a top-five selection may deter many interested parties. As a result, experts anticipate a surge in trade activity during the latter half of the first round.
Several teams in the middle of the pack, including the Indianapolis Colts (No. 15), Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 17), and Los Angeles Rams (No. 19), have reportedly been actively inquiring about potential trade-ups. The primary target for the Colts and Jaguars is believed to be a cornerback, a position that could attract interest from teams like the Chicago Bears (No. 9) or Denver Broncos (No. 12). A bidding war between divisional rivals for the same player, such as Alabama’s Terrion Arnold, could further inflate the price.
The Rams, who haven’t selected a player in the first round since drafting Jared Goff in 2016, are another team to watch. Despite winning a Super Bowl since then and boasting a talented receiver in Puka Nacua, their draft strategy remains uncertain.
The Philadelphia Eagles (No. 22) are also rumored to be contemplating a move up to secure a top receiver. Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. is a strong candidate to be the first non-quarterback off the board, while LSU’s Malik Nabers and Washington’s Rome Odunze are also projected to go in the early to mid-first round. The Eagles may also be in the market for Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, a position they’ve shown a recent affinity for.
Howie Roseman, the Eagles’ general manager, has executed four trades up in the past five drafts, indicating a willingness to be aggressive in pursuit of desired players. Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Eagles make a similar move on Thursday.
