The NFL’s recent adoption of a new kickoff rule, which introduces a landing zone between the goal line and 20-yard line and positions players between the 30- and 40-yard-lines, is prompting teams to consider adjusting their draft strategies to address the anticipated increase in return opportunities.
However, the Miami Dolphins find themselves in a favorable position with wide receiver Braxton Berrios, who has proven to be a highly skilled returner. Berrios led the league in return average with 30.4 yards while playing for the New York Jets in 2021 and maintained an impressive 24.5-yard average last season with Miami.
Berrios is enthusiastic about the revised kickoff rule, citing his belief that it will reinvigorate one of the most electrifying plays in football. He has been diligently studying film from past XFL seasons, where the new rule originated, to gain insights and prepare for the upcoming campaign.
“I’m very excited,” Berrios said. “The fact that I think it’s one of the most exciting plays in a game and over the last few years was definitely getting weaned out a little bit. I’m very excited because I think it’s a big part of the game and a part that I love to do and so yeah, I want those percentages as high as possible.”
Berrios anticipates that the first week of the season will unveil a wide range of approaches to the revamped kickoff play. He believes that the rule change will add an element of unpredictability and excitement to the game.
The Dolphins’ possession of Berrios, who relishes the role of returner, provides them with a significant advantage in adapting to the new kickoff rule. His exceptional skills and eagerness to embrace this aspect of the game will undoubtedly contribute to Miami’s success in the upcoming season.
