NHL Playoffs: Assessing the Intrigue Around the Colorado Avalanche’s Goaltending Situation

The Colorado Avalanche are facing a conundrum in net as they navigate the playoffs. Alexandar Georgiev’s shaky performance in Game 1 against the Winnipeg Jets has prompted coach Jared Bednar to recall Ivan Prosvetov from the AHL and send Arvid Holm back. While Georgiev remains the likely starter, Bednar now has additional options to consider, including Prosvetov as a potential backup or even starter. The uncertain status of Justus Annunen due to illness adds another layer of intrigue to the decision-making process.

Here are the three keys for the Avalanche:

1.

Alexandar Georgiev’s response:

Georgiev has been the team’s workhorse all season, but he has also allowed four or more goals in six of his past eight starts. Can he rebound from a slump in Game 2?

2.

Ivan Prosvetov’s readiness:

The rookie played well in 14 appearances after being given a chance at the No. 2 role. However, he is currently sick and did not dress in Game 1 or practice on Monday.

3.

Justus Annunen’s availability:

Annunen went 11-7-2 with a .921 save percentage in 21 appearances for the Eagles after getting sent down. However, he hasn’t played in an NHL game since January 6th and allowed nine goals on 43 shots before the demotion.

Bednar is far more likely to insert Prosvetov, either as the starter or in relief, than he was Holm, who has zero NHL experience. Bednar was asked about how Georgiev is feeling after the rough performance.

“I’m sure not great,” Bednar said. “It’s going to be about mental toughness, right? Not just for him, for our group.

“If you’re dwelling on the past in the playoffs, then you’re not setting yourselves up for success the next night, and Georgie’s no different. He’s got to reset and go play better than he did last night.”

The Jets are a deep team, but the Avs’ depth up front had a strong Game 1. Colorado scored four goals in three games against Winnipeg in the regular season, but they put six behind Connor Hellebuyck in Game 1. The Jets will certainly focus on trying to play a tighter game, but the Avs can’t expect to score six again. However, continuing to control the play and put the heat on Winnipeg’s goaltender looks like a must, given the uncertainty at the other end.
