Nicholas Meat Constructs Advanced Cattle Barn for Enhanced Animal Welfare and Company Efficiency

LOGANTON, Pa.

– Nicholas Meat, a family-run beef processing company in Clinton County, is constructing a state-of-the-art cattle barn designed to streamline the receipt of cattle, reduce animal stress, and enhance overall operational efficiency. The facility, scheduled to be operational later this year, boasts several innovative features to ensure the well-being of the cattle, including:

Soft corners to minimize injury:

The barn’s design eliminates hard corners, which can pose a risk of injury to cattle during handling.

Rubber floor mats for hoof cushioning:

The rubber floor mats provide a comfortable and non-slip surface for the cattle to stand on, reducing fatigue and potential hoof injuries.

Advanced climate control with waste heat utilization:

The barn is equipped with an advanced climate control system that utilizes waste heat from the plant’s refrigeration system to maintain a comfortable temperature for the cattle during the winter months.

Continuous water access tanks:

The cattle have continuous access to fresh water from strategically placed tanks, ensuring their hydration and well-being.

Ample air circulation with large diameter fans:

Fifteen large diameter fans, each 9 feet in diameter, provide ample air circulation throughout the barn, enhancing the comfort of the animals in all weather conditions.

Internal flush system with reclaimed water utilization:

The barn features an internal flush system that uses reclaimed water to clean the pens and remove manure. The water and manure slurry is then processed through a mechanical separation system, where the solids are retained as a nutrient-rich soil amendment for application to local farmland. The remaining liquids are treated for eventual reuse back into the barn flushing system.

Multi-million dollar sustainable resource facility for water treatment and reuse:

Nicholas Meat is also constructing a multi-million dollar sustainable resource facility that will receive water from the processing facility and subject it to advanced treatment, disinfection, and reverse osmosis. This process will allow Nicholas Meat to reuse up to 90 percent of the water within the meat processing operations, significantly reducing water consumption and promoting environmental sustainability.

The barn’s design prioritizes animal welfare, enabling round-the-clock cattle deliveries and providing comfortable and stress-free conditions during their stay. Nicholas Meat focuses on boneless beef trimmings and sub-primal cuts for further processing, ensuring the efficient utilization of raw materials and adherence to the highest quality standards.
