Facepunch Studios, the developer of the popular sandbox game Garry’s Mod, has announced that it will be removing all Nintendo-related content from the Steam Workshop following a takedown request from Nintendo. This includes any content that uses Nintendo characters, items, or trademarks.
Facepunch Studios confirmed the takedowns in a posting to Steam, stating that the request was “fair enough” given that the content in question belongs to Nintendo. However, the developer also noted that the process of removing all of the Nintendo-related content will take time as there are “20 years of uploads to go through.”
Nintendo has a history of being very protective of its intellectual property. In the past year alone, the company has issued legal challenges to:
* Palworld Pokemon mods
* A popular Switch emulator
* A Nintendo 64 Portal revival that used the official Nintendo 64 SDK
So it’s not surprising that Nintendo would also ask (or rather, demand) that Nintendo-related content be removed from Garry’s Mod. What is a bit surprising, however, is how long it took Nintendo to actually do anything about it. Garry’s Mod has been around for 20 years, and Nintendo-related content has been available on the Steam Workshop for much of that time.
It’s not like this content has been well-kept secret, either. Garry’s Mod is a game that is all about modding, and people have been creating Nintendo-related content for it for years. In fact, a search for “Mario” in the Steam Workshop for Garry’s Mod brings up over 5,500 entries alone.
So it’s clear that Nintendo-related content has been a big part of the Garry’s Mod community for a long time. However, it looks like those days are coming to an end. If you want to continue playing with Nintendo-related content in Garry’s Mod, you’ll need to do so before it’s all removed.
