NIRF Rankings 2024: New Categories, Top Performers, and Key Changes

The Ministry of Education has unveiled the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, marking the 9th edition of this comprehensive report. This year, the NIRF has introduced three new categories, namely State Public Universities, Skill Universities, and Open Universities, expanding its scope to encompass a wider range of educational institutions. The subject domain has also been integrated into the ranking exercise, allowing for a more nuanced evaluation of institutions across diverse disciplines.

The NIRF rankings are meticulously crafted using parameters that encompass various aspects of institutional performance, including teaching, learning, resources, graduation outcomes, research, perception, outreach, and inclusivity. These parameters aim to provide a holistic assessment of an institution’s strengths and its contributions to the educational landscape. While the primary parameters have remained consistent since 2017, notable adjustments have been made to the sub-parameters to enhance the accuracy and relevance of the rankings.

Every major institution will receive an overall ranking, reflecting its overall performance, as well as a discipline-specific ranking, where applicable. This approach provides a more granular understanding of an institution’s strengths within specific fields.

In previous years, the NIRF rankings spanned across 13 categories: Overall, Universities, Colleges, Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Law, Architecture, Dental, Innovation, Agriculture, Allied Institutions, and Research Institutions. With the addition of the three new categories this year, the total number of categories has expanded to 16, reflecting the growing diversity of the Indian higher education system.

The 2024 rankings have brought forth notable achievements. Hindu College, Delhi, has secured the top position in the colleges category, while IIM Ahmedabad has emerged as the frontrunner in the management category. IISc Bengaluru has taken the lead in the universities category, followed by JNU New Delhi in second place and JMI New Delhi in third. IIT Madras has secured the top spot in the engineering category, demonstrating its excellence in this field. Furthermore, IIT Madras has also secured the first position in the overall category, solidifying its status as a leading institution across multiple disciplines.
