No Contempt for Climate Protester Reminding Jurors of Acquittal Right

London judge rules against contemp of court, climate protestor reminding jurors of acquittal rights cannot be charged.

Trudi Warner, arrested in March for holding sign outside Inner London Crown Court that stated “Jurors you have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to your conscience.”

Warner’s actions deemed not criminal by High Court Justice Pushpinder Saini as jurors can reach verdicts based on conscience and Warner caused no interference.

Saini states that Warner’s conduct “does not fall into this category of contempt,” as she did not engage in physical altercations, threats, or disruption.

Warner’s sign holding followed the arrest of hundreds of environmental activists for peaceful protests, amid concerns about erosion of civil rights raised by critics.
