Spider-Man fans, prepare for a swing in a different direction. Insomniac Games, the creators behind the acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, have officially confirmed that the game will not receive any downloadable content (DLC). This news comes as a blow to fans who eagerly anticipated expanded storylines and continued adventures in the web-slinging world.
While the lack of DLC might leave some disappointed, there’s another web to spin. Sony Group Corp has officially confirmed that a PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch in January 2025. This marks one of the fastest transitions for a PlayStation exclusive to make its way to PC, suggesting a continued effort by Sony to reach a wider audience.
Since its launch in September 2023, Spider-Man 2 has received a slew of updates, including the much-anticipated New Game+ mode, allowing players to revisit the game with enhanced abilities. The ability to replay missions and a collection of new suits have also kept players engaged. However, many fans held onto the hope that the game’s conclusion, which introduced intriguing narrative threads like a potential Carnage storyline, would be further explored through DLC.
Those hopes were fueled by a significant data breach at Insomniac in December 2023 that hinted at planned content. An accidental leak of Spider-Man 2’s development game menu earlier this year further solidified expectations, revealing a potential DLC arc referred to as the “Beetle Villain Arc.”
Adding to the uncertainty, Sony recently announced layoffs affecting about 900 employees across its PlayStation workforce. Insomniac was one of the studios impacted, resulting in the cancellation of some in-development games.
Despite the news regarding Spider-Man 2’s DLC, Insomniac is reportedly working on a pipeline of upcoming projects. These include Marvel’s Venom, expected in 2025, and Marvel’s Wolverine, slated for 2026. The studio has also confirmed Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 for 2028 and other exciting titles like a new Ratchet & Clank game in 2029 and Marvel’s X-Men in 2030.
The cancellation of the anticipated DLC raises questions about the timeline and scope of these upcoming projects. Some fans remain hopeful that Insomniac might produce a spinoff similar to the successful Miles Morales standalone title, perhaps focusing on Venom. However, only time will tell what exciting adventures await in the Marvel universe.
