Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to Lead Bangladesh Interim Government

Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has announced that Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will lead an interim government, taking the oath of office on Thursday at 8:00 pm. In a televised address to the nation, the army chief stated that the interim government, consisting of an advisory council of 15 members, will be sworn in on Thursday evening.

General Waker expressed confidence that Yunus, who is currently en route to Bangladesh, will guide the country through a “democratic process” that will benefit its people. “Yunus is very eager to do this,” the army chief added. The Nobel Laureate himself has expressed his commitment to helping Bangladesh navigate its current challenges.

“I’m looking forward to going back home, see what’s happening and how we can organise ourselves to get out of the trouble we are in,” NDTV quoted Yunus as saying to reporters before boarding a flight at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport bound for Dhaka.

Yunus, the 84-year-old economist, was appointed as the head of the interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday, following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her subsequent departure from the country. This decision comes in the wake of deadly protests against Hasina’s government over a controversial quota system in jobs.
