McLaren’s Lando Norris took responsibility for his third-place finish at the British Grand Prix, a race he led and had the potential to win. Despite his strong performance, he admitted to making crucial mistakes that ultimately cost him victory. The result further widened the gap between Norris and Max Verstappen in the Formula One standings.
After losing third place at the start to Verstappen, Norris regained the position 15 laps later and then passed George Russell and Lewis Hamilton to lead the race. However, a crucial strategic call regarding pit stops and tire choices during a rain-affected race proved detrimental to his chances.
Norris, who initially came in a lap later than Verstappen and stayed out longer than his rivals, ultimately found himself behind both Verstappen and Hamilton after a slow pit stop. He attributed the loss to two incorrect decisions made by his team, particularly the choice to switch to soft tires, which he felt was not the optimal strategy.
Despite the disappointment, Norris maintained his second place in the overall standings after his seventh podium finish in 12 races. However, he now trails Verstappen by 84 points.
McLaren team boss Andrea Stella acknowledged that the team had missed an opportunity to capitalize on their strong start. While praising some of their strategic calls, he conceded that others could have been made better. The team will now review their decisions and aim to improve for future races.
