North Carolina Hub Showcases Sustainable Farming Solutions with Former Poultry Barn Turned Greenhouse

A groundbreaking transformation is taking place in Wadesboro, North Carolina, where a former poultry barn is being reborn as a beacon of sustainable agriculture. The Transfarmation Project® has partnered with Tom and Sokchea Lim, former poultry farmers, to convert their facility into a 15,000-square-foot greenhouse, showcasing innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. This project marks a significant step toward addressing the environmental and economic challenges associated with factory farming.

The revitalized hub is not just a vegetable farm; it’s a research center dedicated to exploring and promoting sustainable alternatives for former chicken farmers. The transition from factory farming to specialty-crop production offers numerous environmental benefits, including:

*

Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions:

Specialty-crop farming generates significantly less greenhouse gas compared to factory animal farming, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.
*

Soil Remediation:

The transformation allows for the revitalization of degraded soil, promoting soil health, and fostering biodiversity.
*

Water Conservation:

Specialty crops require less water than factory animal farming, addressing issues of excessive water consumption and pollution.

Tom Lim, who faced financial hardship after the termination of his poultry contract in 2018, is excited about the transformation. He sees it as a path towards a more environmentally friendly and economically viable way of farming. “This transformation is more than a new beginning for our farm; it is also a source of hope for a better, more sustainable future,” he said.

The demonstration hub is designed to serve multiple purposes:

*

Research Center:

It will serve as a focal point for research in sustainable agricultural practices.
*

Visitor Space:

The hub will welcome individuals interested in exploring alternatives to factory farming.
*

Showcase for Farmers:

It will provide a platform for other farmers to develop and exhibit sustainable agricultural opportunities.
*

Public Events Venue:

The hub will offer a firsthand look at the transformative potential of farm transitions.

Tyler Whitley, director of TransfarmationTM at Mercy For Animals, emphasizes the importance of the project. “Tom and Sokchea’s transition from raising more than 540,000 chickens annually to operating a vibrant vegetable farm full of tomatoes, lettuce, berries and mushrooms is a powerful testament to what can be achieved,” he said. “Through their collaboration with TransfarmationTM, the Lims prove that farmers can break free from the exploitative factory-farming system, as well as thrive and enjoy a better quality of life. We hope their farm becomes a beacon of inspiration, motivating farmers, policymakers and the public to visit, witness the transformation firsthand and advocate a sustainable overhaul of our food system.”

The launch of the North Carolina demonstration hub precedes the release of a new book by TransfarmationTM founder Leah Garcés, “Transfarmation: The Movement to Free Us from Factory Farming,” which is scheduled for Sept. 17. This project highlights the growing movement towards sustainable and ethical food production, offering hope for a more just and sustainable future.
