North Korean state media announced that Pyongyang conducted a nuclear trigger simulation drill as a ‘warning signal’ to the United States and South Korea. Under the supervision of leader Kim Jong Un, North Korea launched ‘super-large’ multiple rocket launchers designed for nuclear counterstrikes.
The launches occurred on Monday and marked the initial demonstration of Pyongyang’s new nuclear weapons management and control system known as the ‘nuclear trigger.’ South Korean and Japanese authorities detected the launch of several suspected short-range ballistic missiles, which landed in waters to the east.
According to a KCNA report, Kim stated these drills were preparations for North Korea’s nuclear force to quickly and effectively deter war and take the initiative in any unforeseen situation. In 2022, North Korea declared itself an ‘irreversible’ nuclear weapons state, authorizing the military to launch preemptive nuclear strikes if they perceive a threat to the country’s leadership.
The KCNA described Monday’s drill as a ‘clear warning signal’ to the US and South Korea, conducted during ‘provocative and invasive’ joint military exercises scheduled from April 12 to 26. The US and South Korean air forces aim to showcase their lethal force and enhance their ability to deter, defend, and defeat any adversary.
North Korea has accused South Korea and the US of inciting ‘extreme war fever’ and openly discussing an ‘advance’ towards North Korea. These launches follow China’s decision in March to end UN monitoring of sanctions violations on Kim’s government related to its nuclear and weapons program. Additionally, on Saturday, North Korea’s military unveiled a new anti-aircraft missile along its Western coast.
