Northeast India Reels Under Cyclone Remal’s Impact, Leaving Trail of Devastation

Northeast India has been battered by the impact of Cyclone Remal, leading to widespread flooding, landslides, and severe damage in several regions. Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland have been particularly affected by the storm’s fury.

In Assam, the relentless rains have left a trail of destruction, resulting in the tragic death of one individual and injuries to at least 17 others. The heavy downpour has also caused significant infrastructure damage, including landslides and uprooted trees and electrical wires across various parts of the state.

Meghalaya has not been spared from the cyclone’s wrath, with two fatalities and over 500 injuries recorded. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has reported severe damage to houses, landslides along major roadways, and flash floods in numerous localities. The relentless downpour has also led to the uprooting of trees and electrical wires, disrupting power supply and creating hazardous conditions in Shillong city.

Manipur has also experienced the severe impact of Cyclone Remal, with several areas in Imphal inundated by floodwaters. The heavy rainfall has caused widespread havoc, damaging homes and infrastructure.

Mizoram has witnessed a tragic incident due to the cyclone’s aftermath. A stone quarry collapse on the outskirts of state capital Aizawl claimed the lives of 27 individuals. Rescue workers faced challenging conditions as they battled heavy rain and loose soil to recover the victims.

Nagaland has also suffered the consequences of Cyclone Remal, with four fatalities and damage to over 40 houses reported across the state.

The weather department has issued an Orange alert for heavy rainfall in Tripura, while multiple districts in Assam have been placed on high alert due to the forecast of continued heavy to extremely heavy precipitation. The cyclone’s impact has left a devastating mark on Northeast India, causing immense hardship and loss to the affected communities.
