The Northern Music Awards, held on Tuesday, April 23rd, showcased the exceptional musical talent and contributions of the Northern region. Organized by music therapy charity Nordoff & Robbins, the event celebrated artists, venues, and industry figures who have shaped the Northern music scene.
The awards ceremony took place at the Albert Hall on the same evening that the highly anticipated Co-op Live venue was set to open but was unfortunately canceled. Performances throughout the night included Liam Fray of the Courteeners, Antony Szmierek, Lisa Stansfield, and many others.
Spice Girl Melanie C received the Special Recognition Award, while Breakthrough Act winners The K’s and Aitch earned the Music Moment of the Year award for his performance at Glastonbury last year. Tim Burgess, of the Charlatans, took home the Northern Music Award, emphasizing the need for events like these to be celebrated not just in London but throughout the country.
Manchester’s DJ Paulette, after winning the Best DJ award, highlighted the diversity of talent in Manchester and the importance of recognizing the contributions of all those involved in the music industry, including those behind the scenes. Courteeners took home the Best Band award, with Liam Fray delivering a special acoustic performance that captivated the audience.
Michael Adex, who represents Aitch, won the Industry Icon award, and Lisa Stansfield was honored with the Northern Icon award. Proceeds from the event support Nordoff & Robbins’ work in utilizing music as a means of connection, self-expression, and therapy. The charity is also fundraising to establish a new dedicated music therapy center in Salford.
The Northern Music Awards serve as a testament to the vibrant and thriving music scene in the Northern region. The event not only celebrates the achievements of established artists but also shines a light on emerging musicians who may not yet be recognized at a national level. By supporting and showcasing the Northern music ecosystem, the awards help to foster the growth and development of the industry in the region.
