The GeForce RTX 4090, NVIDIA’s top-of-the-line graphics card, is becoming increasingly difficult to find and its price is rising. This isn’t just speculation; retailers are listing fewer and fewer RTX 4090s, and the prices are steadily climbing. Last month, reports surfaced that the RTX 4090 was completely sold out in many locations across Germany and Austria.
Now, insider knowledge from the Chinese Board Channels forum suggests that NVIDIA has informed its partners that GeForce RTX 4090 production will cease by October 2024. This means that all remaining stock is expected to be gone by the end of October or early November. This scarcity is paving the way for the launch of the GeForce RTX 5080 and GeForce RTX 5090, expected to arrive in January 2025.
Adding to the shortage, the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER is also slated to end production by the end of this month. This means that both of NVIDIA’s top-tier graphics cards will be in short supply by the end of 2024. The GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER and RTX 4090 are popular choices among gamers, consistently ranking high in the latest Steam Hardware Survey. While the GeForce RTX 4080 didn’t reach the same popularity as its predecessor, the RTX 4080 SUPER is the most sought-after option in the $1000 USD price range.
Unfortunately for PC gamers, the situation contrasts with AMD’s recent price cuts for the Radeon RX 7000 Series, which are also attributed to the upcoming launch of their next-generation RDNA 4 GPUs. In this case, NVIDIA’s move is leading to higher prices and limited availability. However, if the performance rumors surrounding the GeForce RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 prove true, there’s hope that sufficient stock will be available to meet demand. We’ll have to wait and see if NVIDIA can manage the transition smoothly and avoid another supply crunch like the one we experienced in the early days of the RTX 40 series launch.
