36-year-old Derek Floyd was one of 10 FDNY employees let go due to budget cuts intended to fund services for migrants. Despite being on desk duty at the time of his termination, Floyd was actively working towards returning to active firefighting. As a veteran with three tours of duty in the Middle East, Floyd had previously suffered a heart attack during his training at the Fire Academy, resulting in his reassignment to a desk job. Tragically, Floyd’s layoff meant he missed out on additional medical benefits for his family and over $600,000 in death benefits. His widow, Cristine, expressed the toll that the layoff took on her husband, stating that he was struggling to stay positive and that it had a significant impact on the family. Despite his efforts to find a new role with a non-profit organization, Floyd’s salary and benefits were insufficient, and the hours prevented him from spending time with his children. Cristine emphasized how much her husband loved his role as a firefighter and the devastation his passing has brought to the family. The Fire Commissioner, Laura Kavanagh, has stated that the department will explore all options to support Floyd’s family during this difficult time.
