NYU Anti-Israel Protesters Form Human Chain as Police Move In for Arrests

Anti-Israel protesters at New York University (NYU) formed human chains on Monday as police moved in to make arrests. The university had previously closed access to the plaza where the protest was taking place and emphasized that it would not allow additional protesters to join due to disruptions to classes and operations. However, additional protesters who were not affiliated with NYU breached the barriers and joined the demonstration.

The university witnessed disorderly, disruptive, and antagonizing behavior that interfered with the safety and security of the community. The university requested assistance from the NYPD, who initially urged people to leave peacefully before ultimately making several arrests.

NYU spokesperson John Beckman emphasized that the university supports students’ right to freedom of expression but prioritizes safety. He noted that the university had avoided clearing the plaza earlier to prevent escalation or violence, but the situation changed with the breach of the barriers.

The university will continue to support individuals’ right to freedom of expression while ensuring the safety of its students and maintaining an equitable learning environment.
