NYU Protest Spreads, Arrests Made
On Monday, pro-Palestinian protests at New York University (NYU) escalated, prompting arrests by the New York Police Department (NYPD). The protests, which have swept across college campuses nationwide, stem from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
NYU administration called upon the NYPD after protestors established an encampment on campus earlier that day. The NYPD spokesperson confirmed multiple arrests, but the exact number remains undisclosed.
Columbia Unrest Continues, Yale Encampment Grows
The NYU arrests are the latest in a series of campus disruptions. Columbia University, in particular, has witnessed ongoing protests for six days, with hundreds of students occupying campus spaces. These protests demand a ceasefire, an end to US military aid to Israel, and the divestment from military weapons manufacturers. Last week, over 100 demonstrators were arrested at Columbia.
Meanwhile, at Yale University, an encampment of protestors calling for divestment swelled to several hundred people. The university issued summonses to 47 students, who now face disciplinary action.
Antisemitism Concerns Raised
While many protests have been peaceful, concerns have been raised over antisemitic rhetoric and fears for the safety of Jewish students. Several protest groups have refuted these characterizations, emphasizing the presence of Jewish participants in their demonstrations.
