Oakland Airport Enhances Passenger Experience with Augmented Reality Games

Oakland International Airport (OAK), located in the bustling San Francisco Bay Area, is enhancing the passenger experience with an innovative addition: augmented reality games. This initiative, part of the Agents of Discovery Bay Area Explorer 5.0 Campaign, is a collaboration with the educational technology platform Agents of Discovery®. Known for its ability to create customized augmented reality experiences, Agents of Discovery® has brought this engaging technology to OAK.

“The San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport team is excited to unveil this new in-terminal activity for passengers at the airport with Agents of Discovery,” says Craig Simon, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “It’s a fun new way for families to spend time at our airport while offering educational experiences for children.”

The Bay Area Explorer 5.0 Campaign is currently active and will continue through September 7. Travelers interested in participating can download the free Agents of Discovery mobile app and engage in various “Missions” across participating locations. These Missions are designed to be both entertaining and educational, offering “Challenges” that cover topics like local history, cultural insights, ecological awareness, and safety protocols. They are available in English, Spanish, and French.

At OAK, the Missions focus on aviation and environmental themes. The campaign has drawn participation from a diverse array of local organizations including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, the National Park Service’s San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, and numerous county and city parks like Santa Clara and Sacramento County Parks, along with the Oakland Zoo and BART.

To participate, users simply need to download the Agents of Discovery app from Google Play or the App Store. They can then locate Missions in their vicinity and download them before beginning their adventures. Once downloaded, these Missions do not require any further data or WiFi to play.

OAK, strategically positioned to serve the East Bay’s dense population, offers convenient access to the region’s vast business, entertainment, and tourism destinations through roadways and the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system.
