Oakland International Airport Appoints New Director of Aviation

The Port of Oakland has appointed Craig Simon as the new Director of Aviation, overseeing the operations of Oakland International Airport (OAK) in the San Francisco Bay area. Mr. Simon assumes this leadership role at a pivotal juncture as the airport embarks on significant business and facility enhancements.

Simon expressed his commitment to leading the airport during this transformative period, stating, “I am committed to leading San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport during this pivotal time of improvement and development for the benefit of our San Francisco Bay region.” He added, “I would like to thank Port leadership for entrusting me with the great honor of taking our OAK team to new heights.”

Oakland International Airport (OAK) has initiated various projects to elevate the passenger experience, including upgrades to the Terminal 1 check-in lobby and restroom facilities. New local concessions and restaurants are also being introduced. The Port’s Terminal Modernization and Development Project is currently undergoing environmental review, with the Final Environmental Impact Report expected later this year.

Craig Simon joined OAK in December 2012 as an Airside Operations Superintendent. In 2020, he was promoted to Assistant Director of Aviation, overseeing all airport operations and compliance functions. He was appointed Interim Director of Aviation in July 2023.

Mr. Simon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Operations and Aviation Maintenance Management from San Jose State University. He is an Airport Certified Employee in both Airfield Operations and Airfield Lighting Maintenance through the American Association of Airport Executives and an instrument-rated private pilot. His aviation career commenced at San Jose International Airport in 2001 as a Senior Airport Operations Specialist, performing airfield inspections of taxiways and active runways. He ultimately advanced to Airport Operations Superintendent, Airside.
