Obituary: Shirley Francis Meservey, a Life Filled with Spunk and Style

Born on October 14, 1940, to Arthur and Florence (Brown) Bradley, Shirley spent her childhood in Portland and attended Portland High School. In 1970, she married the love of her life, Richard Meservey, and together they raised five children while living in Freeport, Maine. Shirley’s career was as colorful as her personality. She worked in the mailroom at LL Bean, ran the accessories counter at Levinsky’s, and prepared coffee and breakfast sandwiches for her “locals” at Maggie’s General Store alongside her dear friend Sally Hawkes. Those who knew Shirley would agree that she had a unique blend of spunk and style, earning her the affectionate title of “pistol.” Her kindness and willingness to lend a helping hand left an indelible mark on all who crossed her path.

Shirley’s family was the cornerstone of her life. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard; five children, Richard Olsen (Joy), Kimberly Brown (David), Michael Olsen (Catherine), Andrea Olsen (Bobby), and Jennifer Meservey Johnson (Michael); seven grandchildren, Kari, Kristen, and Kate Brown, Spencer and Michaela Olsen, and Jaden and Maren Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren (with more on the way!).

Shirley’s legacy extends far beyond her immediate family. She had a gift for making people feel loved and accepted, and her infectious laugh and warm smile will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to a favorite charity in Shirley’s memory. As a tribute to her vibrant spirit, her family encourages everyone to dance often, laugh wholeheartedly, help others in need, and cherish the bonds of family and friendship.
