Odisha Sizzles Under Severe Heatwave, Impacting Health and Economy
Odisha is experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius in several areas. This has led to serious health concerns, affecting approximately 73% of women and 62% of men in the state, according to a sample survey conducted to assess the impact of the heatwave.
Headache, dizziness, nausea, and heat rash are prevalent symptoms reported by respondents. Tragically, one person has died due to heatstroke, and 89 others have been affected by the heatwave in various districts of Odisha.
The heatwave is also having a significant economic impact, with 33% of surveyed individuals reporting financial strain. Urban areas are bearing the brunt of the heatwave’s adverse effects.
Over 77% of participants experience physical discomfort, while 61% cite frequent power outages and water shortages as major infrastructural challenges. Additionally, 56% of respondents have limited access to cooling facilities during the heatwave.
To mitigate the extreme temperatures, respondents suggest modifying urban planning and increasing green spaces (30%), implementing policy changes to address climate change (29%), and enhancing public awareness and education (23.5%).
A staggering 99% of respondents believe that the government should take more proactive measures to address the impacts of heatwaves.
Vinay Jaju, MD of SwitchON Foundation, a voluntary organization focused on environmental and climate change issues, expressed concern over the abnormal and erratic weather conditions in Odisha. “It is alarming to witness such extreme weather patterns,” he stated.
